Scavenging in Tokyo

0 Response(s)

After the launch of rule100.co.uk, I've gotten the scavenger hunter bug and have decided to enter myself. I said that I wasn't going to as I actually selected the 100 items and it wouldn't be fair, but it's just for fun ... I am resigned to the fact that I can't win the prize which I will buy.

Living very close to Ryogoku (the main sumo hub of Tokyo/Japan) means that scenes like this are a weekly occourance.

Lost in Translation

It's 1am and I'm sitting in the communal area of my building, working on my Japanese with the help of my two housemates, Aira and Miamotosan.

After a little while, Miamotosan mentions to Aira that he is also studying (English) via textbook in his spare time and runs off to get it. What he returned with is possibly the greatest thing I've ever seen and to watch him make his way through some example sentences without any kind of irony was amazing.

It wasn't the fact that the sentences were extremely complex (way too complex for a beginner) that was amusing, it was topics it covered, for example, the last sentence that I was practicing before he ran off was along the lines of:

'Tomorrow, I will ride my bike to the station'

Miamotosan well and truly trumps this effort with the enthusiastic, yet slightly concerning admission:

"I might as well kill myself and reconcile myself to my fate."

This is pretty much why I moved to Japan, read on for plenty more.
