Felsted MIS
Overview
I was hired by The Felsted School to design and develop an internal management information system (MIS). The Felsted School is comprised of a Pre-Prepratory, a Prepratory and a Senior school, catering for students aged from 4 - 18. It is located in Felsted, Essex (UK).
The Felsted School is a private boarding school that offers unique opportunities to its students such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and peripertetic music coaching. Felsted's goal was to incorporate all of its daily functionality into a single MIS system, and after conducting a thorough review of the commercially available systems, decided that a bespoke route was required to meet this goal.
I was hired to work directly on site in order to converse with all intended system users (Teachers, students, administrative staff and parents) in order to collate and present a detailed requirements specification document.
Once all of the desired functionality was specified and agreed, the database structure was developed and reviewed to ensure the system would be as efficient and nomilised as possible.
Functionality
Some of the main functionality includes:
- A truely dynamic timetable where additional lesson periods, timetable weeks and events can be added. If students/teachers are at an event it shows on their timetable to avoid any confusin regarding their whereabouts.
- Teaching group members and timetabled periods can be easiy modified and updated via the administrative login.
- Report sets can be generated at any time for all students or a subset (i.e. individual years, houses or study programs).
- An International travel system.
- Event creation and staff/students to invite, reflecting on their personal timetables.
- Homework assignment.
- Parent meeting evening itinary generation.
The MIS was developed over a nine month timescale and has been in use since September 2010. The system is utilised daily by over 270 teachers, 990 students, 960 parents and 50 administrative staff.
